Há quem considere essa década como a mais produtiva da história da música depois dos anos 70. É bem provável que trate-se de um exagero, pois os anos 80 também foram muito bons.
Mas em todo caso, entusiastas do rock costumam dizer que o rock voltou a ter força nessa década, depois do mundo ter sido dominado pelo pop de pista de dança na década anterior.
